Poverty in New York City
Josh Williams Religion 10 3/16/13 Mr. Martinez Cause Of Poverty In The United States Poverty is an increasing problem in the United States. The cause of poverty in the United States is a plethora of things, Such as the economy getting worse so jobs and factories had to make budget cuts so many people lost their job because Of the worsening economy. This is not the only reason though there is also people who have serious drug and alcohol addictions and use all their money on their addictions and then become poor, there is still the gamblers that loose all their money and thereââ¬â¢s the people that never got a good education so never got a good job and was never able to support themselves or families.Poverty is very tragic but sometimes its not only Because someone got laid off their job and thereââ¬â¢s nothing they could do about it, but also it can be the persons fault for addictions, gambling and never taking school seriously and regretting it when their older and donââ¬â¢t have a job to support yourself or family. During the Holocaust there were many events that occurred which violated just about every principle of Catholic Social Teachingââ¬â¢s. There are three that stand out the most; these principles are life and dignity of the human person, option for the poor and vulnerable, and also care for Gods creation. These principles were violated in many ways and various occasions during the holocaust. The holocaust violates life and dignity of the human person in many ways one is that it god decides when ones life shall end and how their life shall go but the holocaust killed many innocent people for no reason and that is not what god planned for these people. ââ¬Å"If we bear all this suffering and if there are still Jews left, when it is over, then Jews, instead of being doomed, will be held up as an example. â⬠ââ¬â Anne Frank. This quote by Anne Frank shows even though Jews were put through so much suffering and were denied their dignity they will still be powerful and great people. ââ¬Å"What exactly was the difference? He wondered to himself. And who decided which people wore the striped pajamas and which people wore the uniforms? â⬠ââ¬â John Boyne. This quote is saying that killing humans is not fair because what if the killer was being killed and god decided who is who so a person should not be able to decide if he or she should live or not that is gods decision.Option for the poor and vulnerable is that people should not be prosecuted or treated differently for any reason but in the holocausts case it was the vulnerable being attacked and treated differently because Hitler and his Nazi army out numbered the Jews. ââ¬Å"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. â⬠ââ¬â Elie Wiesel. This quote is showing that the Jews were vulnerable to the Nazi attacks and that no human should have to go through that pain and suffering no matter what condition of living. ââ¬Å"We are alive. We are human, with good and bad in us. That's all we know for sure. We can't create a new species or a new world. That's been done. Now we have to live within those boundaries. What are our choices? We can despair and curse, and change nothing. We can choose evil like our enemies have done and create a world based on hate. Or we can try to make things better. â⬠ââ¬â Carol Matas. This quote shows that humans no matter how poor, rich, small, tall, or whatever ethnicity or religious beliefs should not be held vulnerable to a force of terrorists or extremist group such as the Naziââ¬â¢s on the Jews. The last principle of catholic social teachings that were violated by the actions of the Naziââ¬â¢s during the holocaust was care for Godââ¬â¢s creations. This is the principle that was violated the most, throughou t the holocaust Jews were abused and worked to death and killed with various ways of torture showing complete disregard to Godââ¬â¢s wishes of loving all and his creations. Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever. Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live. Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes.Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never. â⬠ââ¬â Elie Wiesel. This quote shows the experience of a Jew who was actually in a concentration camp and he had to deal with the pain and suffering and this quote brings out all the si ck torture he received in a quote and how he will be scared for life and will never forget what happened to him at the concentration camp. ââ¬Å"They thought we were stupid to do it, (hide Jews) of course; in fact, it was beyond their comprehension that we would risk so much for Jews. ââ¬â Diet Eman. This quote shows even if it was stupid to help Jews and hide them because of the risk of being killed it was worth it because he was aware of Godââ¬â¢s wishes and how the creation of god should be loved so this noble man sacrificed and put his own life at risk just to help and care for one of Godââ¬â¢s creations. The cause of poverty in the United States is many things in todayââ¬â¢s society, such as the worsening of the economy, job cuts, drug and alcohol addiction, gambling, poor income, and not attending college. In many cases some of these causeââ¬â¢s can intervene and affiliate with each other. For example if someone is poor from spending all of their money on alcoh ol and drugs the might try to gamble to get money back, or if someone does not attend college they might not get enough money from their job to provide for themselves or a family if they have one. ââ¬Å"If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich. â⬠ââ¬â John F, Kennedy. This quote by the former president of the United States claims that if a nation canââ¬â¢t help their people who are suffering through poverty it canââ¬â¢t save the corrupt rich citizens who donââ¬â¢t donate and try to help the struggling lower class then they donââ¬â¢t disserve to be wealthy. This is a secondary source because John F. Kennedy did not suffer from poverty. ââ¬Å"Poverty is often concealed in splendor, and often in extravagance. It is the task of many people to conceal their neediness from others. Consequently they support themselves by temporary means, and everyday is lost in contriving for tomorrow. ââ¬â Samuel Johnson. This quot e is a secondary source because Samuel Johnson did not suffer through poverty. This quote is saying that poverty is not just brought upon someone but if you donââ¬â¢t work hard enough it will come upon you so you must stay humble and never become to lazy and always strive for the best. ââ¬Å"I am a poor man, but I have this consolation: I am poor by accident, not by design. â⬠ââ¬â Josh Billings. This quote shows that poverty is not planned but if you donââ¬â¢t work hard enough it will come to you, this man did not want to be poor but it caught up to him because his lack of effort and laziness. This quote is a primary source because it is written by someone who has experienced poverty. ââ¬Å"The seven deadly sinsâ⬠¦ food, clothing, firing, rent, taxes, respectability and children. Nothing can lift those seven millstones from Man's neck but money; and the spirit cannot soar until the millstones are lifted. â⬠ââ¬â George Bernard Shaw. This quote represent s everything that can corrupt a man and transform a good man into a sinner and these actions will leave him corrupt and poor. Poverty is experienced through out the world in large numbers but continues to grow as a huge struggle for The United states.I have my own personal experience with poverty in my life, as do many citizens of the United States. My personal experience with poverty was about two years ago my aunt who is also my godmother, and a very strong woman in my life whom I look up to was fired from her job because her company needed to save money. This impacted my life in a huge way because my aunt had nowhere to stay and she had to live with e and my family until she found a new job and was able to afford a new house.During this time period every day after my homework I would look in the newspaper with my aunt and help her find jobs that sounded like fun because it made me sad seeing my aunt like this because I looked up to her and she is one of the most inspirational wom en in my life because of the way she faugh through her struggles and overcame poverty and is now very successful. But sadly after my aunt was back on her feet and doing good at her new job a few months later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. When I heard this news I was heartbroken but I didnââ¬â¢t let it upset me because I know that my aunt is the strongest women ever and she can overcome anything she has been cleared of cancer twice and keeps fighting it off I know she can do anything. Poverty even in today remains as one of the United Stats biggest tribulations. More then 15% of the United States suffers from poverty, this is not acceptable we as proud citizens of the United States should fight for each other and always have one anotherââ¬â¢s back in hardships such as poverty.Ways average people can help decrease the poverty rate s very simple and will not even contribute too much time out of their day, there are easy fast simple ways we can help people suffering from po verty. These ways are doing charitable acts such as donating money, food and shelter to homeless people, or simply just can food drives at your local school just try to get involved and help your fellow neighborââ¬â¢s. Poverty may be strong but as a powerful unified nation we can do anything and poverty would stand no chance against us because we are gods children and we can do anything!

Good practice for Managing Learning and Development in Groups
ââ¬Å"In group work the aim is not simply the transmission of content (the content focus) but the need to work with that content (the process focus). Students use and develop two sets of overlapping skills.â⬠Staff and Education Development Unit, LSHTMIt is important to encourage our students to learn in the groups. There are just some of the skills they can develop through the group work:â⬠¢Thinking aloud ââ¬â putting thoughts into wordsâ⬠¢Active learning ââ¬â learning through action and reactionâ⬠¢Defending your position ââ¬â the power of debateâ⬠¢Going deeper into the subject ââ¬â creativity, originality and critical judgementâ⬠¢Professional skills ââ¬â learning how to work productively with othersâ⬠¢Learning how to learn ââ¬â personal growthTo summarise: To create current good practice for Managing Learning and Development in Groups , the first we need to understand the principles and practices of managing learning and develop ment in groups: â⬠¢strategies to manage group behavior and dynamics;â⬠¢techniques which facilitate the delivery of learning and development in groups;â⬠¢characteristics of group environments that foster learning and development,â⬠¢risks to consider when managing learning and development in groups;â⬠¢ways to involve learners in the management of their own learning and development in groups â⬠¢barriers to management of individual learning in groupsThen we need to create environments that are suitable for group learning and development. To do that, we need to consult with group members to adapt their learning and development environments to improve their learning outcomes. We need to use deferent motivational methods to engage the group and its individual members in the learning and development process. We need to facilitate communication, collaboration and learning between group members. We need manage the risks associated with group learning and development. We also need to use different methods and techniques to manage learning and development in groups: e.g.: Involve learners in agreeing group learning objectives; adapt and implement delivery methods, use activities and resources to meet the learning and development objectives of the group; manage group learning strategies and delivery methods to reflect changing requirements; provide individual advice to learners to assist their decision-making about future learning needs. We need minimize risks to safety, health, wellbeing and security of learners and comply with legal and organizational requirements: Support learnersââ¬â¢ rights in relation to equality, diversity and inclusion, manage confidentiality in relation to learners and the organization, and maintain learning and development records in accordance with organizational procedures. But where are always some barriers we will face while teaching in the groups. These are some of the things my students say they dislike while learnin g in group: â⬠¢A small group can easily be dominated by one person.Finding a way to channel student misbehaviour into something productive is your first line of attack. Students who misbehave have talents that school does little to bring out. Students who are ringleaders have leadership qualities that weââ¬â¢d be wise to nurture. We want them to use their talents for good instead of bad so we need to give them that opportunity. Sitting and being quiet is not appealing to a leader. E.g.: Then Iââ¬â¢m presenting a slide show, every five minutes or so weââ¬â¢d need it to be quiet so that groups of students could hear me and the slideshow.I had one student who I knew was going to have a hard time being quiet. So I made him the engineer. He was the one who pushed the button to start the recording and pressing the next slide show. It was totally quiet in my room. Instead of allowing B.H. to be the guy who ruined our class projects by yapping, he became our trusted engineer. H e felt good about it and the class appreciated him for it. Sometimes if students have a problem with talking in the classroom, you might arrange your seats in groups rather than isolated tables so that learning can be more social and project based. â⬠¢When members of the groupà wonders around the classroom.Teachers who have students who have trouble wandering around the room might make those kids the paper or door monitors so they have a reason to wander and wander with a purpose thatââ¬â¢s productive for the classroom. â⬠¢Students who say ââ¬Å" I donââ¬â¢t careâ⬠Some students say they donââ¬â¢t care about missing out. I found it it is usually because they really do care. If it doesnââ¬â¢t bother students to miss out on your activities then your activities arenââ¬â¢t interesting for them, but because they are in my lesson because they chose to be that is usually not true. I try not to send students out of the room for misbehaving. A student often misb ehaves because heââ¬â¢s boredâ⬠¦he then misbehavesâ⬠¦you send him away. Student got what he wanted. I try not to reward bad behaviour in this way. It diminishes your own power and gives another incentive to misbehave. As I stated earlier, I believe a good Classroom Management is the key to an environment where learning can take place and students can feel safe participating. I hope to create an environment that is conducive to learning and involves all my students. I believe the most important part of classroom management is not the behaviour problems but creating a good rapport with the students, encouraging them to succeed and setting high expectations for them. As well as using an engaging a curriculum, I believe you can create this environment and it will limit the behaviour problems in your classroom from the start.

Concepts of Self and Selfhood Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Concepts of Self and Selfhood - Essay Example Locke shared the same ideas with Marx, believing that humans give up certain freedoms to have protection through their government. As a result, the basic nature of human self is portrayed in the light of selfhood and individuality and human nature along with its grace and flaws and it is done in accordance to the spirituality and ethical and metaphysical beliefs of the cultural environment of his time. The empiricism point of view enumerated the physical, mental and the mind/body aspect as tabula rasa by John Locke. In accordance to him, the entire nature of human self is the constant nurture of sensory experiences where the individual gathers information right from birth. On the other hand, Plato incorporated the idea of anthropology and metaphysics in defining the amalgamation of the concept of physical, mental and the mind/body aspect of the human nature. He suggested that the human nature is the combination of genitals, belly, breast and the concept of intellectuality. He also st ated the basic human nature was always uncomfortable with this coexistence and death was the only way out of this coercion. John Lockes approach to this issue of selfhood or individualism is based on the contradiction of values of his time and ethical methods available in his era (1632 - 1704). He "was directed against the principles of Sir Robert Filmer, whose books, asserting the divine authority of kings and denying any right of resistance, were thought by Locke and his fellow Whigs to be too influential among the gentry to be left unchallenged by those who held that resistance to an arbitrary monarch might be justified." (Locke, viii) Thus, it is certain that John Locke believed in the human self of man and that man should be paid his dues whereby there should be equalities in terms of ethics in the society. John Locke's approach to metaphysic and ethics is in this way very modern in nature and reading his text Second Treatise of Government yields a romantic approach towards different ethical consequences. This is because he was more of a political philosopher than an economist. Thus, a philosophical justification comes forward with his view of forceful equality of selfhood and individuality. An ardent empiricist by nature John Locke is always in favor of revolution. He conveys every opportunity to practice this approach, he feels that selfhood, and individuality is possible only by revolution. In a way, John Locke is at par with Marx but his approach is more fiscal oriented and data base where as Locke's outlook is more assumption based and romance is added to it enthusiastically. His views were based on the faith that human nature is the best judge of identifying right and wrong, that it is obvious that the population would determine correctly, what is ultimately right would eradicate differences in the process, and selfhood and individuality would prevail. (Lamb, 226-8) As such, in Marx's opinion, the alienation/duplication between the secular and religious worlds needs to be followed by a subsequent recognition of the alienation/duplication of the secular world itself for evoking the proper aspects of selfhood and individualism. The religious world is a projection of the secular world but the secular world

Marketing module Literature review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Marketing module - Literature review Example Several companies around the globe have used the basic concepts of marketing in enhancing their success over the years. For instance, the manufacturing and the hospitality industry have benefited from using the marketing concepts in analyzing the performance in the market. I believe that In future, the definition of marketing is expected to change due to the introduction of the interpersonal role of the executive in marketing. Hence, future marketing will entail supplying commodities that exceed clientsââ¬â¢ expectations in an enticing manner. Persons intending to be marketers will have to face the challenges that businesses face in the market. Expectations to learn from the module Marketing concepts I learned that organizations plan for marketing purposely to lead the market. This means that the process of planning has to be continuous for an organization in the marketplace. As such, business managers market to maximize the proceeds of an organization. Modern businesses focus on a description of ethics for promoting a product in the market (Kotler 2003). Organization marketing should ensure that they plan their marketing based on the requirements stipulated by the legal authorities. Indeed, planning is critical in devising effective marketing stratagems. Methods of marketing I equally learned that marketing takes several forms in the contemporary society. As such, the businesses usually focus on the target customer with the aim of attaining profits in operations. I also noticed that organizations usually consult widely prior to undertaking the initiative. In modern marketing sales promotions, stratagems are preferred since they result to huge benefits for the organizations.

Role of a Management Consultant Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Role of a Management Consultant - Essay Example B., 2001). The same brand is part of a long, classic, one-on-one competition with its archrival, PepsiCo. Inc. Coca Cola experienced a rapid growth in sales and consumer ââ¬âpreference, thanks to Roberto Goizueta who raised Coca Cola to the heights of performance while he was CEO from 1981 to 1997. Using his sharp analytical skills and market foresight and risk-taking tendency, Goizueta took Coca Cola into the direction of high sales, increasing market-share, revenue gains and high profit margins. He revolutionized how the soda industry is run and showed the world that just by focusing on Coca Colaââ¬â¢s principle black beverage; the company became a top-notch giant. This very philosophy inspired Cokeââ¬â¢s followers, and even the Board of Directors, which included tycoons such as Warren Buffet, Herbert A. Allen and Donald Keough. They remained admirers of this approach and frowned upon any notions of diversification, unlike what was happening inside PepsiCo. Throughout the nineties, through this very approach, Coca Cola saw its rise in the world of beverage as an undisputed winner over PepsiCo. Inc. Goizueta took some very successful decision during his time, one of which was to form a new company under the name Coca Cola Enterprises, in 1986, which handled the US bottling operations for Coca Cola. This, immediately, helped Coca Cola in terms of the debt burden and also, raised their stock volumes, while reassuring quality bottling and distribution. (Cravens & Piercy, 2009). According to Cravens and Piercy (2009), this move turned out to be quite a profitable one as Coca Cola could erase off $2.4 billion from the balance sheet. Moreover, having formed Coca Cola Enterprises, US bottling operations were handled well and timely distribution channels were assured. He was known to be risky, as he himself used to admit. His believes were of the nature that risk-taking is a necessity for growth and development. In a growing consumer-market, playing safe all the time could mean losing out on opportunities and business. Goizueta is renowned for another important move: his non-contemporary approach of globalization of brands. ââ¬ËThink global, act localââ¬â¢ was the underlying philosophy of Goizeuta to expand and capture foreign markets. Unlike the general wave of globalization, he insisted that, to develop a successful multinational brand, it was important to think globally while acting in the local context. He explained that standardization and uniformity represent a strong and consistent image of a brand and it triggers a sense of surety in the minds of consumers worldwide. This uniformity can help create a very powerful image of the brand; while also considering vital selling points and marketing campaign specifics of differing cultures and geographies. At the very end of all this positive period, it did become quite apparent that the direction in which Coca Cola was heading into, had a dead-end. Arguably, his headstrong, upfro nt style of leadership, even though raised Coca Cola to reach new heights in the short-run; however, his moves, somehow, created a recipe for future disaster. His decisions focused more on the bottling operations than the actual customers. It is important to note that Mr. Roberto Goizueta maintained that Coca Cola did not need diversification to increase revenue. Instead, according to Suhaib Riaz (2008), he borrowed millions
